As a new experiment for this year’s PAX East, we wanted to capture more of what goes on at PAX and give those who were unable to attend a hands-on view from ASTRO. Throughout the weekend, we had a video crew dedicated to capturing things like our brand new show booth, a YouTube meet up with our Eon team and other YouTube producers, and some of our highlights of games on the floor.

The 2012 competitive schedule is already well under way, and MLG is kicking off their live events for spectators this weekend in Columbus, Ohio for the very first MLG Pro Circuit Winter Championship. Over 1,000 gamers will compete in StarCraft 2 and Halo Reach and in three new fighting games to the circuit, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur V, and King of Fighters XIII. With a combined $200,000 prize pool, it’s sure to draw out the best competitive gamers in the world.

ASTRO will continue to support the MLG and gamers by providing full MixAmp racks at all Halo team stations and the main stage, as well as at all PC setups for StarCraft 2. Competitors need only to plug their A40 or A30 headset in to our MixAmps for full Dolby 7.1 audio and be able to hear your teammates for crucial team communication.

Eon Instinct is set to defend their title after winning the MLG National Championship last November in Providence, RI. They remain one of just a few teams without any changes to their team or coach since the last competition. They’ve proven that with time, skill, and keeping their roster the same, that it can lead to winning several Halo titles. In the same fashion, Instinct has been an ASTRO supporter and used our gears for many years, and we were happy to partner with them and the rest of Eon for competitions throughout the year.

The competitive gaming season kicked off this last weekend with Hypefestation, a Gears of War 3 tournament held in Newark, NJ. We are a big supporter of the eSports scene, and we participated as one of the premiere sponsors of the event by providing our MixAmps at all of the main tournament stations.

For Hypefestation’s 2nd tournament theyere invited out 32 of the best Gears of War 3 teams who battled it out for a prize pool of $12K. Sponsors BeyondGaming and Twitch.tv provided live streaming of the event and matches, featuring ASTRO Listen Ins.

A big congrats to the first place winners Infinity and the second place team NSAN3Z. You can catch all the replays of the matches on BeyondGaming’s Twitch.tv channel. We look forward to seeing more Gears of War 3 in the eSports scene!

So we have a bit of a busy month here… Simultaneously, ASTRO will be supporting IGN Pro League 3 in Atlantic City, NJ and DEVESTATION 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona!

The IGN Pro League 3 Tournament October 6th-9th, is drawing both Starcraft 2 and League of Legends fans en mass to Atlantic City, NJ with a total prize pool of over $100,000. The event is in the heart of Atlantic City’s entertainment life split between two different venues: Bally’s and Caesars. With a lineup of pros, personalities, and casters such as: BoxeR, IdrA, HuK, MC, djWheat, the IGN eSports cast team, Anna Prosser, Rachel ‘Seltzer’ Quirico, and NBA player Gordon Hayward, you can be sure this is the RTS gaming event you can’t miss. We’re excited to announce that we are a supporter for this landmark event, and will be outfitting the entire tournament area with our award winning A40 Audio Systems, and will also be providing 40 pairs of our A*STAR Earbuds for attendee prizing throughout the event.

DEVESTATION 2011 is taking place in Phoenix, AZ on the same weekend. Featuring tons of tournaments for the biggest and best fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and more. Other awesome games that’ll be featured for tournaments are Halo Reach, Black Ops, Gears of War 3 and even League of Legends new Domination mode. Wow. This past MLG Anaheim event was an absolutely surreal experience. With the MLG having a heavy east coast presence, there are many localized teams that aren’t able to make the journey across the country due to a number of reasons when the MLG hosts its singular west coast event. Traditionally this seems to have folks walking away with a generally underwhelming experience from a spectator attendance standpoint. This year’s west coast show was a break in that chain of history with yet again another record setting event for the MLG on multiple levels.

The production value of the live streams that the MLG has spent a huge focus on this year have been met with a resounding success. With 30,000,000+ stream views world-wide and double the spectators of the record setting Columbus event, it’s clear that the MLG has found a rhythm that has been embraced by the community. One of the most difficult things to do is to find a balance that translates to a show that’s entertaining to watch for both an online and live attendees. Picking the right games that translate to both of those very different experiences is something that the MLG has definitely done well this year. The Halo series has been the hallmark of what defined the MLG for years, and has been the building block of their success. The Halo community has been the foundation for the MLG. Much of the MLG’s success definitely goes out to so many of the early adopters from the Halo community that poured their blood, sweat, and tears into a league that they believed in, and that has allowed the MLG to only get better over the years. The CoD community with all of the players and fans who spend countless hours pitting against each other in one of the biggest FPS games being played, and has felt left out of live events from previous years, has also played their part in growing their presence at the live events. This presence has shown the world that they’ve got the drive to move competitive gaming far beyond what it currently is. Then there’s StarCraft…

Being what I will refer to as a PC gamer, I’ve been waiting for the MLG to really embrace PC games. The World of Warcraft PvP part of the league last year was great, but I always felt like there was so much more out there that could be embraced and bring the MLG to the next level. With the addition of Starcraft 2 to the pro-circuit for 2011, and the overwhelming success it has brought to the MLG after just three events, it has become crystal clear that there will be even more of a focus on PC games in the years to come. The global participation of the community for this game is something that has allowed for that sweet spot of entertainment for the spectators both online and at the event, and is definitely taking MLG to that next step as a global leader in competitive gaming. I wouldn’t be surprised to see even more of a push for similar games on the circuit in the near future.
