While I didn’t get to go, Brett and Jordan were awesome enough to email us some pictures of the event so check them out!

San Francisco’s Astro Studios takes aim at the next generation of video-game gear.

    Blast Off

“We want to be the Nike or Burton of video gaming,” explains Brett Lovelady, founder of Astro Studios, a San Francisco–based industrial design firm that focuses on personal entertainment equipment. He’s talking about the studio’s new venture, Astro Gaming, a spin-off company that recently began making pro-grade gaming gear. “There was an opportunity to give gaming pros better-performing product, much like you would do with any professional sport,” he says. “You know, let’s give the best athletes the best products to perform with.” Just as Nike Lab develops specialty shoes for Olympians, Astro Gaming wants to make gear for the next kings of Kong.

Building a company with the cachet of Nike or Burton is no easy feat, but Astro has already shown that it has the design chops to pull it off. The spin-off company’s very first product, the A40 Audio System, which includes a headset with a detachable boom mic and a mixing amp to control player conversations and the game’s soundtrack, has become the official equipment of Major League Gaming (MLG), the gaming world’s equivalent of Major League Baseball or the NFL. (I.D. awarded the A40 an honorable mention in this year’s Annual Design Review.) Astro designed the system to mix the look of solid, professional-grade audio gear with a “spark of sci-fi,” says Lovelady, by using a careful mix of glossy and matte plastics—perfect for guys who think of themselves as Imperial stormtroopers. With a new line of specialty bags for hauling gaming consoles and Guitar Hero controllers, Astro is now expanding the product range.

“Astro brings a really interesting discipline to product development that doesn’t otherwise exist in the video-gaming space,” says Michael Sepso, co-founder and chairman of MLG, who was amazed to see how much attention the studio lavished on the A40. “They spent at least a year on tour with us, working directly with a couple of our pro teams, prototyping, developing, and really fine-tuning that product,” he adds. As a result, he says, the headsets have been “universally accepted by the top competitive gamers,” and the mixing amps are even built into MLG’s competitive gaming stations.

Since setting up shop in 1994, Lovelady and his team of 25 employees have had a significant hand in shaping the look and feel of gaming equipment. They’ve designed PCs for Alienware, the hot-rod gaming company that Dell acquired in 2006; shaped Microsoft’s Xbox 360; and designed the performance-driven Blackbird and Firebird PCs for HP. At a moment when video games are expanding across different delivery channels and maturing into a full-fledged entertainment medium, Astro has placed itself at the center of the action, pulling together disparate threads to shape the next generation of gaming technology. Its latest projects include a glossy, faceted console and controller for OnLive, a service that will stream games over the web; a webcam for Yoostar (see review, page 84); and a playful, family-oriented brand identity for Gazillion Entertainment, a massively multiplayer online gaming community that has partnered with Marvel and Lego.

Astro found its niche by bringing an unusual perspective to product design, says Lovelady, who was previously a vice president at both frog design and Lunar Design. “We try to wrap in a certain amount of whimsy, or irreverence, or humor,” he says. “That takes the edge off the seriousness of a lot of product design. We’ve always had the ability to stretch a little more and be a little crazier.”

As Lovelady points out, Astro has rarely taken on work related to the health and medical fields—bread-and-butter jobs for many design studios. “Part of it comes back to the types of designers we hire,” he says. “We hire a lot of people with action-sports backgrounds—surf, skate, snow, and motor sports. People who have a real good sense of the street, music, and youth markets.” The firm further encourages these traits with “extracurricular activities” beyond its raw, loftlike South of Market office space. Last year, Astro rented a cabin near Lake Tahoe for employees to use as a base for snowboarding in order to keep the staff connected to the culture their products target.

“We’re pretty intuitive people, and we’re hands-on,” says Lovelady. Rather than torturing themselves for too long with computers and focus groups, Astro’s designers often prefer to jump right in, build models, and play with them in-house. “When we have a big idea, we want to bring it live,” he says.

The latest big idea from Astro is the Zune HD, which hits shelves this month. While Microsoft had already built all the functionality—HD radio, HD video output, wireless web browser, video syncing with Xbox Live—it was up to Astro to wrap it in a shell that could compete head-to-head with the iPod Touch. Like many competitors, the Zune HD clearly uses the iPod’s minimalist, touch-screen style as a departure point but adds sharper edges and a folded back panel that cradles nicely in the palm of the hand. Lovelady says the objective was to make the player appear rugged yet rich, much like a high-end watch. It attempts to do so with a slim size, brushed metallic accents, and tiny precision screws countersunk into the back. “Its design language is inspired by precious gems,” says Steve Kaneko, experience director at Microsoft, noting that its faceted form isn’t “overly radiused or worked.” Indeed, Zune HD loses the blobby buttons of the original but retains the brand’s personalization program—the new version, like the old, will be available in a variety of colors, with optional laser-engraved art. “We’re all kind of crossing our fingers that maybe it can scrape off a little bit of Apple’s market share,” says Lovelady, pausing as he considers the challenge of going up against a design icon. “But we’re not delusional.”

However, with Astro Gaming, the studio appears well positioned to turn out a few icons of its own. In fact, MLG’s Sepso could think of only one way to describe the importance of Astro Gaming’s A40 headset to the league: “It’s like the Wilson football for the NFL.” By immersing itself in youth culture and standing ready to jump on new technology, Astro Studios will be shaping the gaming experience for years to come.

Using the Astro Original MixAmp with the PS3

If you have the Astro MixAmp (purchased after November 19th 2009 from the US store), please click here for the Astro MixAmp PS3 Setup Guide.

To get the Astro Original MixAmp going full speed on your Playstation 3, with fully adjustable GAME/VOICE balance control, we recommend the USB Music Fairy. This driverless USB adapter enables you to run voice communication as a dedicated voice channel, vital if you want to use the balancing features of the A40 MixAmp.

Using the USB Music Fairy with the Astro Original MixAmp

The USB Music Fairy is fully compatible with the PS3 out of the box. However, pay special attention to wiring the USB Music Fairy as it’s a bit different than most other adapters we’ve tried.

    Cable Connections

    Power and Voice:

    • Connect the included USB-to-USB Mini ‘B’ cable to an available USB port on the PS3 and attach the other end to the USB input on the MixAmp. This will power the MixAmp.

    • Connect one of the included 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cables from the A40’s PC MIC output to the RED connector on the PS3 Adapter. A second 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cable is included in the PS3 Adapter package, connect this to the GREEN jack on the PS3 Adapter package, and then attach it to either one of the Daisy chain ports (after the red Daisy chain connector is removed).

    Game Audio:

    • To provide the best audio to your MixAmp, we recommend using a TOSlink optical cable (sold separately) for full Dolby® Digital Surround Sound. Connect it directly from the rear of the PS3 to your MixAmp.

    • You can also connect your MixAmp to the PS3 via the included RCA cables or from the PS3 AV cable directly to the Left/Right RCA inputs on the back of your MixAmp, providing Dolby ProLogic II Surround Sound via Dolby Heaphone.

    • To see the “better” and “best” setup solutions for your PlayStation 3, you can read the Astro MixAmp manual here.

    Software Settings

Here’s how to get your PS3 software setup to best work with the MixAmp. Don’t forget to flip through the pictures above as well – we’ve got screenshots of the harder to find menu items that you might otherwise miss.

Go to Settings > Accessory Settings > Audio Device Settings, and make sure that the “Generic USB Audio Device” or “C-Media USB Audio Device” is recognized and selected for the Input/Output devices.

    • You can also set your voice level in this menu screen. The default level is set at three (3) which is ideal for most gamers. We recommend adjusting it so the bar graph on the top just reaches the red section when you speak loudly.

    • You can hear how you’ll sound to other players if you go back to the Accessory Settings menu and select the Voice Changer option.

    • Go back and double check that you are connected properly and your mic is set to the optimal level if you experience problems.

PS3 Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Settings

If you use a TOSlink optical cable to experience enhanced Dolby Digital 5.1 output from your PS3, you may need to adjust your PS3 settings based on how you connect your PS3 to your display device.

    HDMI

    • If you are connecting your PS3 to your TV with an HDMI cable and use an optical cable from the TV to your MixAmp, go to Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings and specify the HDMI output.

    • Then manually choose your method of output and select “Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch”. Make sure that “DTS 5.1 Ch” is NOT checked.

    • Please note that most TVs are capable of audio HDMI to TOSlink optical pass-through but if you are not sure if your TV supports this option, please contact your TV manufacturer.

    TOSlink Optical Cable

    • If you are connecting your PS3 to your Astro MixAmp directly with a TOSlink optical cable, go to Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings and specify the Optical Digital output.

    • Then select “Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch.” for the output format. Again, make sure that “DTS 5.1 Ch” is NOT checked.

Gotta love PAX. There truly isn’t any other gaming event that can bring EVERY type of gamer together. Whether you play Dungeons and Dragons, can’t get enough of Call of Duty 4, or fall asleep face-first into your Nintendo DS every night, there’s a place for you at the Penny Arcade Expo. This year, ASTRO Gaming came to PAX in style, bringing our kick-ass booth, amazing ASTRO crew in tow, and plenty of ways to rock out with the A40 Audio System.

First, I want to say thanks to our great friends at Bungie and Microsoft who were awesome enough to hook us up with the upcoming new Halo 3 Mythic Maps. For the first time, we had a chance to play the Midship remake (now known as Heretic) and the brand new Citadel. Go check out our last blog post for some shots of the setup and more details!

You’ve heard of the OMEGATHON, right? You know, the three-day elimination tournament where twenty randomly picked “Omeganauts” (picked from those who pre-order their PAX passes) duke it out on random PC, console, or tabletop games? This year, the Omeganauts ripped through rounds of Mario Kart Wii, Bookworm Adventures, Halo 3: ODST, The Beatles: Rock Band, Connect Four, and for the championship, an epic final match of Skee-Ball! Congratulations to Valwryn for winning first place and Fallout for taking second! Man, now we need to go practice our skee-ball

You wouldn’t think of PAX as the place for tons of concerts, but rest assured, there’s no shortage of impressive (and slightly nerd-core) music acts. In attendance were Freezepop, the high-energy electronic band which you may remember from Guitar Hero 2 and Rock Band. Other PAX favorites include MC Frontalot, the best in nerdcore/geek rap (and the 541st best rapper in the world), and the infamous Jonathan Coulton whose mystical folk music can sooth even the most angsty of nerds.

Don’t forget all the awesome PAX after parties. Gotta say, it’s pretty sweet when a company party includes free drinks (if you’re legal), food, and limited edition swag. We could tell you all about what went down at the Bungie party, the Microsoft party, or maybe the insane CCP/EVE Online party… but we’d have to kill you. Okay, one hint: midgets!

Lastly, despite all the fun and games, unfortunately some attendees came to PAX carrying the swine flu (otherwise known as its PAX variant: H1Nerd1). If you attended the event and are feeling any flu like symptoms, please see your doctor immediately. If you flew or took the train home, please check this list of flights/trains to see if you may be at risk. For more information on H1N1, please check the King County Department of Health website.

Did you miss PAX this year? Never fear, there’s also PAX East coming to Boston this March and we just might have to stop by. Otherwise, the regular ol’ PAX will always be there every year in Seattle and so will we.

Just remember to wash your hands. Kthxbye.

Before we get a chance to actually try out all of the kick-ass upcoming games on display here, we got our gorgeous friends at Bungie to hook us up!

Exclusively at PAX 2009, the ASTRO Gaming booth is now demoing the new Mythic Maps for ,Halo 3, Heretic and Citadel. Everyone remembers and loves Midship, right? Now known as Heretic, you can relive all those nostalgic memories of sticking kids with grenades from Halo 2 in this faithful remake.

The new Citadel map, don’t know too much about it just because I’ve been locked behind a counter the entire time, but you can stop by for another few hours and give it a shot!

Stay tuned for a full recap (with pics!) on all the stuff we got to play and see.

Seeds meant barely anything as the #1 seeded and highly popular team Str8 Rippin finished in 4th place after being dropped to the losers bracket by Carbon and eliminated by Instinct. Walshy, the fan favorite pro that recently settled into Carbon, carried the 8th seeded Carbon team all the way through to the championship finals.

In an epic all-out final match against the new Carbon, Triggers Down ignored the audience’s constant cheering for Carbon and snatched the MLG Dallas championship with a winning score of 6-4.

Congrats also go out to AmazYn for taking the Gears of War 2 championship! Other favored Gears teams MbN The Business walked away with 2nd place and NOX Raw Talent took 3rd.

Lastly, congratulations to eMazing Gaming for taking 1st place in WoW 3v3. 2nd place went out to x6tense and 3rd to Complexity.

Any pro will tell you the key to success is communication and the ASTRO A40 Audio System is the pro-gamers best solution for crystal clear audio and voice communication. Try an ASTRO A40 Headset at one of the MLG events or consumer shows like the Penny Arcade Festival (PAX!) so you can see what the hype is all about.
