Stars shine at Gamers for Giving charity event
If you couldn't tell by the 1:1 replica of the Great Pyramids made with empty Red Bull cans, the second-annual Gamers 4 Giving charity tournament and LAN event in Ann Arbor, Michigan this past weekend is a wrap.
Held at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center, the event featured a 300-man LAN, Super Smash Brothers Tournament, and what turned out to be a highly-competitive Halo 3 2v2 tournament. With $1,000 and 2 sets of Recon Armor on the line, this series was hotly contested and the field was populated with a bevy of MLG semi-pros and hopefuls.
MLG professional players Walshy, Neighbor, Lunchbox and Roy put on a 2v2 clinic in the pro lounge for those who dared go up against them. In case you were wondering, it wasn't pretty: these are the best 4v4 players in the world, and with only 2-on-2, there is no room for errors and even less chance of a lucky kill against them.
Adding to the MLG ambience, ASTRO threw down a Pro Rack for each gaming station during the tournament -- the Pro Rack houses four A40 MixAmps and adds Dolby Headphone surround sound and privately networked voice communication for each team. The A40 Audio System is the official audio equipment for the Major League Gaming Pro Circuit and offers players and offers networked audio combined with surround sound in a single, highly user-configurable headset.
With the table set for a great tournament, Haggie and Venom walked away from their competition with a big win for Vanity Gaming -- congrats guys!
Right before the final matches of Halo 3, Gamers 4 Giving founder Zach Wigal took some time to draw winners from the gigantor box of 13,000 raffle tickets sold at the event. With prizes on the line like two sets of ASTRO A40 Audio Systems, four Transport Series bags, and another set of Recon Armor from Bungie (in case you didn't have the chops to win the armor outright like tournament winners Haggie and Venom), the tension was intense.
But in the end, it was the kids who really won -- the proceeds will go to bringing gaming goodness to children who are stuck in the hospital trying to get better from critical illnesses. We hear it's hard to get a decent respawn IRL, so hat's off to Zach and Gamers 4 Giving!
